I Still Believe (2022 Remaster)

by Dr. Evil

/

about

This is the remastered (re)release of “I Still Believe”, a vinyl-only track released in 2001 under the “Dr. Evil” moniker.

There has been a substantial effort made to restore this track because it was very poorly recorded over two decades ago. Comparatively, the original Dr. Evil release sounds like an underwater AM radio; it’s distorted, muddy, has phasing issues, and almost seems like it’s in mono except for the left channel being noticeably louder than the right channel. Originally a “rerub” boot meant as filler for my live sets, I did not care all that much about its recording quality at the time. I remember giving CD-R copies to some other DJ friends as was common in those days. But, unbeknownst to me, in fall of 2001, someone handed one of these copies to the program director at 95.3FM (WPYO) in Orlando and they stuck it into regular rotation on the air. The mix did not have any official title, so the station gave it their own title: “I Still Believe” (the actual original title was "You Got Me Falling in Love"). Eventually, someone told me the song was being played and, initially, I was confused as to what they were talking about since I didn’t recognize any song of mine with this “title”. The rest is history. Ultimately, word got to the original label, and they got in touch with me around 2002 to discuss future projects but nothing ever materialized from those discussions.

The G-Park (OG) version is such a great song in its own right, just a total classic. I seem to recall downloading it as an MP3 from Napster which, if some of you will remember, didn’t exactly provide high-fidelity music files to begin with. Keep in mind this was 2001 and quality streaming or internet music purchasing like we have today was still pretty much a futuristic concept. Even Beatport didn’t come around until about 3 years later, so Napster (and passing around CD-Rs) was pretty much what we had. I would suggest supporting the original artist if you can because they really made a very special song here that really should have gotten way more attention.

In any event, an enormous effort has gone into restoring the audio of this track, and I’m sure everyone will agree it sounds 1,000x better than it did. I have way better mastering tools available to me today, and this is what it SHOULD have sounded like in the first place. The source song was recorded very hot to what sounds like analog tape, so there is some light distortion in parts and there is nothing that can be done to eliminate it - I’ve tried every trick I know. It’s still magnitudes better anyway.
